The Books I Loved in 2022

2022 was a great reading year for me. A few years ago I switched to reading on the Libby app (library app) on my phone, and haven’t looked back – it’s made reading much convenient and easier on my hands. Here are my favorites:

Ultimate Favorites:

Fiction: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow – Gabrielle Zevin

What a story! Just incredible – and all the more so given that it’s a story about video game designers, but I’ve played about five minutes of video games ever and loved everything in the book, included passages set inside a game.

Non-fiction: Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals – Oliver Burkeman

This is for all of us who act like we can get everything done (but, of course, we can’t since we won’t live forever).

Most Talked About

This Is Not a Book about Benedict Cumberbatch: The Joy of Loving Something—Anything—Like Your Life Depends on It – Tabitha Carvan

I got my husband to read this too, and we have been referencing it ever since.

Most Tears and Laughter

We All Want Impossible Things – Catherine Newman

A novel for anyone who ministers/lives/works/has been around death and dying. (And y’all, the cover copy does not do this book justice – it is a delight.)

For the Parents and Those Who Have Been Parented

Good Inside: A Guide to Becoming the Parent You Want to Be – Becky Kennedy

This isn’t how I parent, but it sure is how I want to parent.

Bomb Shelter: Love, Time, and Other Explosives – Mary Laura Philpott

Are you afraid of your kids dying or getting very sick? This is the one for you – and it is very much not a downer. (Also would fit into the category of most tears and laughter.)

Most Reread

These Precious Days: Essays – Ann Patchett

I’ve read the title essay at least three times already.

Most Insightful

The Anatomy of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller – John Truby

This book exploded how I think about long-form stories.
